Who is behind Camy Huot?
I’m an art school dropout who wanted to focus on music rather than fine arts. I find it to be a more honest or much more fun way of expressing myself.
When did music first become part of your life? When did you first fall in love with sound?
Since I was very little. My older brother didn’t care to organise his CDs on shelves, so he made little CD towers on his bedroom floor, and I just dove into them and listened to as many as possible when he was not around.
If you had to describe your music in terms of not music … what would you say?
Energy, discomfort, introspection. You can dance to it, but you can also cry to it. Or laugh at it, if that’s the mood you’re in.
What are you looking for in music? What are the boundaries that you look to explore with music?
Catharsis. I want movement. My music, hopefully, should be pleasant to listen to, but I also want it to be a cheap therapy session.
What is sound to you?
Disorganised noise that we rearrange in our way until we are content with it.
Which person, artist, or incident inspired you when you first started making music?
Sexy Sushi (aka Rebeka Warrior). Always. She really has no boundaries when it comes to self-expression. Her lyrics are raw and disturbing, but they are honest. She can sing, mock, shout, cry, and her music will still make you move. Inside or outside.
What themes are you currently drawn to in your work?
Chaos, yearning, toxicity, introspection.
Your new single „Echoes in my room“ was recently released. Can you tell us more about the process of creating this track? How does the birth of a new composition happen for you?
It’s a track I made back in the summer of 2023. I was just starting to make music again. It was a scary time because I decided to quit my day job then, so I had to trick my brain into thinking it was a good idea. I did a lot of partying that summer. It was very warm, so I would sleep during the day and live during the night. I think the lyrics reflect my state of mind then; doubtful and introspective. And the music reflects what was going on with my body; probably screaming for help and healthier choices.
You are a DJ, music producer, co-founder of Wavecrash events, and host the radio shows „Too Many Creeps“ and „Batcage Radio“. How do you manage to balance all your musical activities?
Honestly, I don’t really manage at all. I hop from one to the other depending on the bookings I get. But aside from social activities, it’s all I do. It’s my full-time project. Currently, Wavecrash is on hold because I am changing venues. Batcage is also on hold because my co-host is traveling around. Which is great because it gives me more time to produce music in the studio I share with my partner. But yes, I project hop to the next thing in front of me.
What artistic influences, outside of music, have had a significant influence on how you approach your art?
Tracey Emin. Her artwork called „My Bed“ could literally be the album cover of „Echoes in My Room“; it consists of her bed with bedroom objects and trash in a disheveled state.I had a hard time back when I was in art school. I couldn’t connect with most artists featured and taught to us. But her work was so rough and disgusting sometimes, and above all: honest.
How would you describe the world you are trying to create during your performances?
Unhinged but delicious.
What’s next for you? What are you most looking forward to?
Hopefully, to be able to continue living the way I do. Making more music, more collaborations with artists I like. More live performances. More of everything. Nothing in particular. Just the same but more, and further away.
