Who is behind Dear Mother?
Merel Bechtold & me (Joey Marin de Boer) started the band, Merel being the guitar-player and I am the drummer. After one and a half years of writing and searching for a vocalist, David Pear presented himself, and it was a match made in heaven. We were struggling with getting the name for the band right. I think we wrote like 3 or 4 songs or maybe even more before we came up with the name. It was at one point that Merel wrote a letter to her mother in English, and she started the letter with „Dear Mother“. That’s when we decided that it was the right name for our band. That’s how the band was born.

If you had to put your music into a drawer and print a label on it, what would it say?
This is a difficult one. There are SO MANY sub-genres in the metal scene. I think the one that comes the closest to defining a label is „Alternative Metalcore“.

Forget about genres for a second – Dear Mother’s music sounds like …?
We get a lot of different things actually, some people say Stone Sour, Architects, In Flames, even Linkin Park. I don’t think you can say we sound exactly like one thing, but those acts come closest. At least, that’s what our fans say!

Which sort of mood produces the best songs?
Depends on what kind of song you are writing. And who is writing it! Speaking for myself, whenever I write a drum-part I need to be emotionally triggered, and that can be any mood. Overall for me it works best if I’m happy, just because in that case the inspiration kicks in most.

Which instrument will surely NEVER be heard on a Dear Mother-album?
Oooooh… We only see challenges in using new instruments, so literally anything can end up on a Dear Mother record.. If I have to choose something I probably would say we’re never going to use bagpipes on an album! Haha

Which record would you want to listen to when you leave the bathroom in the morning, while the beautiful girl/handsome guy from last night is still in your bed?
ForevermoreWhitesnake.

The Fairy-Godmother pops up in front of you and grants you a wish. What do you wish for?
Like, for the fun of this question; besides bringing back balance to the environment and trying to save other human beings. I just want my family and friends to be happy. If I am going in totally for myself: I want one big mansion somewhere on an island to make the Dear Mother headquarters in, with endless amounts of good food, and all my friends living there with us!

No alcohol is no solution either. What booze combination will definitely dissolve all your troubles and issues?
For me personally: Prosecco! Or Wodka-Redbull.

What shows you that someone is a true friend?
When they are there for you in dark times.

Who was the hero of your childhood?
My dad.

What is the most embarrassing/surprising record in your CD-shelf?
For most people this is embarrassing: I have almost all the CDs of Nickelback. They absolutely rock!

What’s next? Tour? Studio? Vacation? Something completely different?
I’m going on vacation first, and hopefully at the beginning of 2022 we can start to tour! We’re currently working on some new stuff so recording our next record is going to be planned hopefully after we did some cool tours to promote Bulletproof!
